How I taught my mom Twitter

After watching my mom and others struggle to find the initial value in Twitter, I have come up with some pointers on gaining the most value when first joining.

1. Sync up Twitter messages with Facebook Status

Most my friends seem to be accustomed to updating their Facebook status, so I recommend they get in the habit of updating their Facebook status only with Twitter.  This way you can publish to your Facebook friends as well as your new Twitter friends with ease.

(Enter your name/pw then click the sync Twitter to facebook checkbox)

2.  Turn on Twitter mobile

Two key benefits here.

  1. Send tweets from text message
  2. Text message alerts from those you care about most

I keep my family, girlfriend and boss on text message so I see everything they ever tweet.

My parents could never log into Twitter again, yet they get every update my sister and I send via text message.

3.  Follow interesting Twitter profiles

Find a few people or accounts that are interesting to you.  Think of your favorite author or music artist, there’s a good chance they have a Twitter account.  I usually recommend:

I’m proud to say my immediate family is now on Twitter! @dabootysmackmom @lizzlerizzle @ekelly911

I found it ironic that I am speaking at the World Professional Blogger Conference and I’ve never written a personal blog post.  So here is my first.
